Antifouling in Tenerife: a haul-out at Los Cristianos
Anything that stays in the Atlantic for long grows weed, barnacles and slime below the waterline. It slows the boat down, raises fuel use and, left alone, harms the hull. Antifouling paint is what keeps it off, and renewing it is one of the most common reasons a boat comes out of the water at our varadero in Los Cristianos.
Coming out of the water
Our travel lift is the biggest in the south of Tenerife: it lifts boats up to 24 metres long and 110 tonnes. Lighter boats, up to about 9 metres and 5 tonnes, go on the forklift. Either way the boat stands in our 5,500 m² yard at the Los Cristianos fishing dock while the work is done.
What the antifouling service includes
- Hull inspection and preparation: we look at the hull before any paint goes on and prepare the surface so the new coat holds.
- Expert application: by roller or by spray (airless), whichever suits the boat and the paint.
- Advice for your boat: which antifouling suits your boat and the way you use it.
Where old layers have built up, we can sandblast, down to removing the gelcoat, before the new system goes on. Painting and repair work is done under cover in our warehouse.
Before a long passage
For many yachts crossing the Atlantic, the Canaries are the last stop before the ocean. Fresh antifouling is part of getting a yacht ready for the crossing, and the same yard looks after the engine, the rigging and the electrics.
